Glossary of Texas Hold’em Terms
  • Ante – Chips placed on table before cards have been dealt.
  • Blind – A forced bet by two players to dealer’s immediate left.
  • Button -A chip that represents the dealer.
  • Call – To see a bet.
  • Check – Staying in the game without folding or betting.
  • Check-raise – Checking cards then raising your hand after someone has made a bet.
  • Community cards – Cards used by all players put in the middle of the table.
  • Deuce – Slang for a 2.
  • Flop – The first cards dealt by the dealer for everyone to use.
  • Flush – Five cards in the same suit.
  • Fold – Throwing cards away.
  • Hole card – A card that has an unknown value to other players.
  • Pot – Money placed in the middle of the table.
  • Pot limit – Limit for how much you can bet or raise.
  • Re-raise – Raising a player who already raised you.
  • River – The fifth and final community card; all players can use the “river card” to form their hand.
  • Royal flush – AKQJ10 in same suit.
  • Showdown – Everyone in the game showing their hands.
  • Straight flush – Five cards of the same suit in sequence.
  • Table – Stakes only bet with the money you have on the table.
  • Trips – Three of a kind.
  • Turn – The fourth community card; all players can use the “turn card” to form their hand.
